Muriel, VE7EGB, made a trip down to Beaverdell just prior to the 2002 RAC Convention held in Vernon. She made a tape interview with Alf Ackerman, VE7LC. His wife had been admitted to a care facility in Penticton, and Alf would be moving to Penticton to be close to her. Alf was dismantling his station and had contacted NORAC to take his long-time accumulation of Ham Radio gear. Muriel said, “He felt that the Ham Fest would be a good opportunity to sell whatever and give particular items to the Science Centre. We took 3 vehicles, and came back loaded...I don’t remember if Alf was a member of NORAC, but he certainly was well-known in the interior of B.C.”
This 20 minute edited interview gives an interesting insight into the early years of amateur radio. For anyone interested in this topic I would also highly recommend “Spilsbury’s Coast” written by Howard White and A.J.Spilsbury (Harbour Publishing 1987). It is a fascinating and entertaining book about one of BC’s pioneering hams who later became a radio communications equipment manufacturer and eventually the founder of an airline.
